A stellar weekend for goaltender Joseph Young of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had him being named the SJHL’s Goaltender of the Week Monday.

Friday night, Young was in goal as the Melville Millionaires came to town. The 18-year-old rookie stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced through 65 minutes of play, then all eight shooters from the Millionaires in the shootout to help guide the team to a 2-1 victory.

Then, Saturday, Young was again between the pipes as the Yorkton Terriers came to town. He faced a tough task, as the league’s leading scorer, Chantz Petruic, was looking to continue a streak going back 22 games.

Young was able to stand tall between the pipes in the game. He faced 34 shots in the game and stopped all of them as he picked up the shutout.

The win Friday night was Young’s first in the SJHL, and the shutout Saturday was also a career first for the netminder.

Young has now appeared in six games this season. He has a goals-against-average of 2.06 and a save percentage of 0.938. He has the fourth-best GAA of all rookie goaltenders, and his GAA is fifth-best overall.
