A blizzard is buffeting most of Saskatchewan this morning, with winds speeds being clocked well in excess of 100 kilometres an hour.

Overnight, all highways in the Weyburn area were closed due to the weather conditions, as the roads were ice-covered with zero visibility. Highway conditions have greatly improved in recent hours as the winds have died down and visibility has improved.

Here in Weyburn, 1st Avenue (Highway 13) from Government Road to 16th Street is closed. This is due to downed power lines. Saskpower crews are working to clear the scene, and be able to re-open the road.

In addition to the highways being closed, the storm is also said to be responsible for power outages across Saskatchewan, including a reported outage in Weyburn. In many instances, SaskPower is unable to send crews out to work on restoring power in some parts of the province due to the conditions. They are hoping to be able to get crews out within a few hours to work to restore power for those affected areas. You can find the latest information on SaskPower outages on their website.

The extreme winds have also brought down a number of tree limbs in areas of Weyburn, and there have been some reports of shingles being lost in the storm as well. The blowing snow has greatly reduced visibility, even within the city limits. With a number of hazards on the roadways throughout the city, the Weyburn Police Service is asking people to drive with extreme caution. One other impact of the storm is the arms at the rail crossing at Government Road. The wind appears to have broken the arms.

The weather conditions prompting the South East Cornerstone Public School Division to cancel all of their rural buses for the day. The Weyburn and Estevan city buses will still be running. Due to the weather conditions and power outages, Southeast College is closing all of its campuses for the day.

The storm, which Environment Canada first issued an advisory for on Tuesday, is expected to last for much of the day, bringing blowing snow, and sustained winds over 60 kilometres an hour, and gusts reaching up to 80-100 kph. Here in Weyburn, the highest wind speed recorded was a gust of 103 kph, seen at midnight, before the power outage knocked the reporting station offline. The highest wind speed seen in the province was 143 kph. reported at Bratt's Lake.

We will continue to keep you up to date on the storm throughout the day.
