The Weyburn Police Service is holding its Bike Rodeo on Wednesday, where young riders will learn about bike safety and have a chance to ride in the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Parade.

The event takes place at Jubilee Park from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., there is no pre-registration required and all ages are welcome. The start of the course will be on the west sidewalk by the front of the Spark Centre.

Riders will have their bikes and helmets inspected, and representatives from SGI will teach about bike safety.

“After we've looked over your bikes and we know you're good to go and that your helmet fits properly and your straps are adjusted, we're going to get you to continue on to our bike safety course,” said organizer Constable Melinda Mintenko. “You're going to work on such things as starts and stops and intersection and driveway safety.”

She added there is also the option to decorate your bike.

“From there you're going to enter into a slow bike race, it's actually quite tricky. Afterward, the Salvation Army is putting on a barbecue.”

Mintenko said the confident bikers will be invited to ride in the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Parade.

“The Chief of Police, the head coach of the Weyburn Beavers, myself, and some of the players will be biking with the group, leaving from the start of the parade road and ending at the courthouse. It'll be a short route, but I think it's going to be a lot of fun, a really nice addition to the parade, especially with those decorated bikes.”

Many people are volunteering at this event, including the Weyburn Beavers.

“Without our volunteers, we never could make this happen, so in advance, I'd like to say thank you to the community and businesses for offering yourselves to us to make this community event a success.”

Mintenko is also thankful to the City of Weyburn workers for taking the time to set up the course.

On top of everything else happening at this event, Canadian tire has also donated a bike for one lucky person attending the Bike Rodeo.
