If you like visiting the animals at Weyburn's summer-long petting zoo, the Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park, then you should know what foods to bring as treats for them.

"We typically don't want to feed anything like rhubarb, avocados, citrus onions, or potatoes, as they have toxic toxic qualities," shared President of the Board of Directors for WTAP, Jodi Larson. "Another key thing is to avoid anything with yeast or that's been fermented, so nothing like bread crumbs, or stale bread. That's not good for our animals."

She said, however, there are foods safe for the animals.

"We encourage people feeding them in moderation things such as apples, carrots, peas, celery, lettuce and spinach," she noted. "Our pigs and goats can also have things like squash, which they really, really enjoy."

Larson said when in doubt about a food, don't feed it to the animals, and check with someone from the animal park."

Guidelines are, in fact, posted outlining what is safe for animals.

"Guidelines around how many pieces to try to give to each at the most, just to make sure that they're not getting too much at any one time."
