The Saskatchewan Summer Games are just a few short months away with tryouts for the the South East District soccer team set to begin this weekend. 

The girls' soccer tryouts are scheduled for April 20 and 28 and the boys' soccer tryouts will be on April 21 at Jubilee Park in Weyburn. These tryouts are for those born between 2009-2011. 

The summer games are set from July 21 to July 27 in Lloydminster. Joni Hagen, executive director of the South East Sports, Culture, and Recreation District said that the tryouts will be held from the end of April until the beginning of July.  

Each sport establishes the dates and details of each tryout and the selection of their teams. Once they have selected their teams the South East District helps the teams prepare for scheduling their time in Lloydminster.  

Hagen said that the Saskatchewan games are an incredible experience for the athletes to compete in, she added that it is, in essence, a mini-Olympics. This includes an athlete's village for the athletes, coaches, and managers.  

“It’s not only an opportunity to compete at a higher level in your sports, but it’s also an opportunity to be a part of Saskatchewan’s largest multisport event.” 

The summer games aim to foster sports development across the province and provides an opportunity for athletes to compete at a higher level. With some moving on to the Canada Games as well as the nationals. It also gives athletes a chance to build camaraderie as they cheer on other athletes in their district.  

Estevan, Weyburn as well as 72 rural municipalities that make up the South East district.  

“We basically go up to the number one highway, across the number one highway there and then down to the US border.”  

There are different age classifications for each of the sports. With some players as young as eleven, going up to age 18.  Those selected to be on the district team will pay a $100 Sask. Games fee with additional costs being dependent on which sport they are playing.
