The R.M. of Weyburn has recently started a bounty program for coyotes. Coyotes are a common predator in southern Saskatchewan, with coyotes having become more of a headache in the last number of years, partly due to preying on livestock.

Norm McFadden, Reeve for the R.M. of Weyburn, said they've talked about it for awhile now, and, "I know there's pockets within the R.M., and even outlying areas of neighboring R.M.'s, where the coyote population is getting to be quite extensive."

McFadden said they decided to try out the program and see if they can help out some of the area farmers.

"With calving season underway now, that's even more stress added to them with these packs of coyotes in the area."

He explained they are asking people to turn in a set of four paws to the R.M. Shop, with an incentive of $20 per set.

"The number of trappers in the area has declined somewhat, and the pelts aren't worth as much as they once were. So, it's not as feasible for people to be out trapping if there's no money to be made at it. Hopefully this helps the situation out a little bit and some of these trappers can get out there and start taking some of the numbers down."

In terms of the length of the program, McFadden added they'll see what the numbers look like coming in, and go from there. The program can be terminated at any time by the municipality.

Forms can be found online at rmweyburn.ca or picked up at the R.M. office. Remittance forms are required to be completed to collect the incentive.

McFadden added that they do ask that people provide the name and the number from the landowner of where they've gotten the coyote(s) from. The paws then get delivered out to the R.M. shop and they get counted up there.

"For anybody's that interested in it, they can get out there and help out the neighbors."
