The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings finished off the preseason Saturday night in Wilcox, taking on the Notre Dame Hounds. The Wings were looking to finish off the exhibition schedule with a perfect record, but it wasn’t meant to be, as the Hounds picked up a 5-1 victory.

Feisty would be a good way to describe the game, as the two teams combined for over 160 penalty minutes, the majority coming in the first period alone.

It started out when Weyburn’s Anthony Chambers dropped the gloves with Joe Santalucia just 9:03 into the first period. Both players were shown the door, and then things really flew off the handle with just over five minutes remaining.

Keigan Callander from the Wings got into a fight with Jake Dale with 5:36 on the clock. Bother were given game misconducts, as well as the five-minute majors. Adding to the mess, all four other skaters from each team were handed ten-minute misconducts, crowding the penalty boxes in the Duncan McNeil Arena.

Callander was also given a minor for instigating, and the penalty would lead to the first goal of the game, as Kyle Robinson scored on the power play, giving Notre Dame the lead. Then, just 29 seconds after the power-play goal, Jayce Nikbakht made it a 2-0 game for the Hounds.

In the second period, both teams came out firing, but it would be the goaltenders who shone. Aaron DeKok and Noah DeCottignies were perfect on 12 shots in the Weyburn net, while Ruben Cooper and Cody Levesque stymied Weyburn shooters in the Notre Dame end.

Two quick goals from the Hounds would put them out 4-0, as Braydon Iwaschuk and Sho Takai scored 1:45 apart to begin the period. The Wings responded as Jaeger Lapointe scored, with assists on the goal coming from Jacob Piller and Jordin Kojima.

The Hounds would end the attempt at a comeback shortly after, though, as a Curtis Wiebe goal made it 5-1 Notre Dame.

The Red Wings will now spend the week preparing for the start of the regular season. They open up against the Estevan Bruins at home on Friday.
