Next up in our Player Profiles is defenceman Jeveon Schwean. The 18-year-old prefers to go by 'Chevy' to everyone that knows him.

Schwean is one of the first players to be selected in the SJHL Draft by the Wings and work his way up to be a big part of the organization. Chevy was selected in the first round, fourth overall in 2015.  He then played two seasons for the Swift Current Legionnaires in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA league, while being an affiliate with the Wings and playing six games. Last season he joined the squad full time and played 49 games as a 17-year-old rookie.

"It's a huge honour. This is a great system with lots of tradition here. A lot of memories I've already made and it's been a great time here," Schwean said of being a high draft pick.

After recording just one goal and five points last season, the defenceman has already matched those totals in 15 games so far this year. He plays in all situations for the Red Wings and his goal on the season was rocket one-timer on the powerplay.

"I'd say I bring probably a two-way game," Chevy explained. "I'm definitely a little more defensive, but at times I think I can be offensive."

The second-year defenceman was also part of the inaugural SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Regina last year. The mini-tournament recognized some of the best players aged 17 and 18 in the league. After playing in it last season and having a better statistical year, Schwean should have a good chance of being chosen once again.

Growing up in Moosomin, Sask. Chevy will have a chance to play in front of his hometown and plenty of friends and family this weekend. The Red Wings and Hounds will play a regular season game in the small town. It's a rare opportunity and one Schwean is excited and nervous for.

"It's going to pretty nervewracking, though, being at home and everyone I know watching. It should be an interesting game. My parents said a couple people that just moved to Calgary are coming back to watch the game. It should be good," the 18-year-old said with a smile. He has fond memories of playing in his hometown, including what might be on of his earliest hockey memories.

"My favourite memory would be in Squirts we didn't lose a game, which was pretty neat. That was probably the best season I've ever had win-wise. I like to think I was [a top player on the team]. I was just a young buck back then so I can't really remember."

Being a jokester and a kid who likes to laugh, Schwean has fit right in on the team and made plenty of friends. Despite being only 18 years old, he is a respected figure in the locker room and on the ice. He thinks this a team that has formed close friendships already that should help them throughout the long season.

"It helps us quite a bit. We do quite a bit of team stuff and everyone bonds together. It's been helping us along the way," Schwean said.

With that chemistry in mind, Schwean says he and others in the room have high hopes for this season.

"I think this team is capable of a championship. We have a few missing pieces right now," he stated. "We just have to keep working on our game and things will come together – I think this is a championship team."
