The Weyburn Police Service is advising anyone who may have or may yet receive a text requesting banking information to take caution.

Calls and texts are showing up on phones throughout the southeast part of the province, saying either the recipients account has been breached, or they require certain information to stop it.

Police Chief Jamie Blunden said this is a phishing scam, and even he has received these texts lately on his own phone, as have others he knows.

"Anything that comes in that's suspicious, don't answer," said Blunden. "It's just a way for them to try to obtain information on you."

He said if you're not sure, you can do a Google search and check out the business itself, or even give them a call.

However, Blunden emphasized, do not click the link in the text, and don' respond to it.

"No legitimate business is going to ask for details on your accounts, or is going to ask for you to respond by hitting a link," he said.

Again, he emphasises, do not engage with these calls and texts.
