The Weyburn Police Service arrested an impaired driver who was found having a blood alcohol level of .340, which is four times the legal limit of .08.

How is this possible?

"To have a blood alcohol level that high and still be functioning normally well, they've got a significant dependency on alcohol, and they've built up a significant tolerance," explained Deputy Chief Rod Stafford. "That doesn't alleviate the impaired aspect of it, but their body learns how to function at those high levels."

For most people, he added, the vast majority of the population, a blood alcohol of .4 or greater would warrant medical treatment.

"They've built up such a tolerance, they can do that to a certain degree," he said. "But certainly at blood alcohol levels in that range, there is a huge safety issue. There is with any impaired driving, that's why it's such a big deal and it's why so many people are killed because of it."
