More heat could be on the way for southeast Saskatchewan. The forecast is calling for temperatures to once again get to the low-30's by the middle of the week. The temperatures could be right in the wheelhouse for a heat warning to be issued for the region, similar to what happened last week.

“Wednesday’s forecast temperature high is 32, as is Thursday, so those two days in particular, especially looking at Wednesday night’s temperature being around 16, that would qualify, I think, for a heat warning to be issued for your area,” explained Natalie Hasell, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

High temperatures, which are often accompanied by a high humidex, can take its toll on the body as people look for ways to beat the heat.

“It’s an event that will affect everyone,” Hasell pointed out. There’s no single person out there who is not susceptible to heat. There are, however, members of the population who are more susceptible – at a higher risk – for heat illness.”

These groups include older adults, infants, young children and those with chronic health issues. Hasell also referenced some studies which have shown medications used for some mental illnesses can be less effective in the heat.

When it comes to staying healthy during a heatwave, it is recommended to stay hydrated. This means drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcoholic beverages. As well, dressing properly can help to stay cooler. If possible, find air conditioning.

“If you don’t have access to air conditioning, an option can be a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan,” Hasell recommended as an alternative. “Just let that kind of cool you off.”
