The Weyburn Kinsmen & Kinettes Club is getting ready for their First Annual Pumpkin Roll Derby, happening on October 14th.

“We're going to be having registration of pumpkins at 1:00 to 1:45 p.m., and then we'll start rolling that 2:00 p.m. When you're eliminated, you can take your pumpkin home, or you could decorate it there, or we have a smashing station where you'll be given implements of destruction to dispose of it,” said Club Secretary Adrian Prybylski.

He said this includes things like a sledgehammer, crowbar, or a big hammer.

“You could smash it on the ground., and there will be safety glasses and stuff for people.”

As for the decorating, Prybylski said they'll have markers and pencils and maybe even stickers available, “to just pretty it up and then we'll take pictures of them and a winner will be decided afterwards.”

This means that even if you're eliminated from the derby, there's still a chance to win by decorating the pumpkin and and getting a top prize.

No pre-registration is in place for this event.

“Basically people just need to come on down, show up, register, and we'll have 45 minutes of registration, so that will be more than enough time, and then when we know how many people will have, we'll create the brackets for the racing and then we'll commence with racing,” he explained.

He said they'll also be having a barbecue with either a burger or a hot dog, along with chips and pop all for $5.

Since the location is the south part of Confederation Drive at the top of the hill, parking will be limited, so Prybylski recommends parking over by River Park and walk up the hill.

“We'll have bathrooms and food there, and a whole lot of fun for everybody.”

Funds from this event will go back into the community, “and will help with all the other activities that we produce this year. We have the Twinkle tour, we have several parks that we take care of and then this will give us more resources to do bigger and better things.”

Sponsors for this event are Prairie Sky Co-op, Wholesale, Barber Motors, Weyburn Dodge, NSWB, Studio 7, RONA, Westrum Lumber, Rider Drilling, Huebner Sanitary Services,  Myrglod Steel and Metals, South Country Equipment, and the City of Weyburn.

He added that anyone with any questions about the actual pumpkin rolling contest can feel free to message the Weyburn Kin Club on Facebook. Find the link HERE.
