Mayor Marcel Roy has stated the City of Weyburn's willingness to join the province and the Canadian government in aiding those fleeing the Ukraine.

"Saskatchewan, and we in Weyburn as well as other cities, have a very large Ukrainian population," he noted.

"Speaking up for myself, the Mayor of Weyburn, and the citizens of Weyburn, I am sure that we would be more than willing to work with any organizations that needs to assist in the relocation of refugees within our city."

He said the City will follow suit with the province's plan to do so.

"I will, as Mayor, I'll put it forward to our Council to see at what we can assist and more so it would be just working with the groups, coordinating groups that will be different groups within the community to be the ones that will just be coordinating and assisting us where we can in relocation of these refugees," he shared.

"I'll put that forward to the government in the Mayor's Caucus," he said.

"There's already a huge Weyburn Housing has a lot of empty and vacant places and weather and they're very underutilized and that's one of the places where I'm sure that the government somehow working with them could utilize these places."

"That would be one of the things that I, as a mayor, am taking to the Mayors Caucus would be advocating to the that these the housing belongs to Weyburn Housing and Yellow Grass Housing and places like that, where there's all these vacant housing they could be utilized for people in this type of international crisis."

Roy said there has not been a time in all his years since he was policing, when Weyburn has made a pledge to help out refugees.

"Years back, when Vietnam fell. There was a lot of assistance within our City that way for a lot of the people that were fleeing out of Vietnam after the communists were taking over."

The next meeting of Weyburn City Council we be at 6:00 p.m. on February 28, 2022 in Council Chambers at City Hall.
