Aspiring actors and budding stars can have the chance to hone their skills and develop their talent throughout this winter and spring.

Even those who just want to be involved in a regular, creative activity can take part in an ongoing project that has the potential to open doors and help to cultivate well-rounded individuals. Improvisation, writing, public speaking and all other aspects of theatre training are known to enhance anyone's leadership capabilities.

For those young people seeking a challenge, or maybe even a spotlight, the CMHA Youth Theatre program begins Tuesday in Weyburn.

“They’ll be doing some leadership stuff, some drama games, monologue and scene work, usually some improv and character development,” said Program Director Tasha Collins.

The freedom to be involved in youth-led creative challenges is appealing especially for those whose talents shine off-stage. Imaginers, dramatists and humorists alike can all have input toward what the final outcome will be. At this point, what kind of final product still lays within the realm of infinite possibilities.

“I know that every year they spend a large portion of their time working on writing and script development and things like that,” she explained. “There is lots of stuff to look forward to within this program.”

It’s certainly well worth the cost of $75 for the full eight-month program. Collins said the youth who are involved take away from it “a lot of awesome qualities from participating.”

Young people ages nine up to 15 are encouraged to join their fellow thespians every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. from now until May of next year, with a break during the Christmas holidays.

“We ask that youth register, because a commitment is required as they put on their own play,” said Collins.

She said anyone needing more information can contact her at the Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association at 306-842-7959 or tashac@cmhask.com.
