It wasn’t pretty, but it will go down as a win in the standings and two points for the Weyburn Red Wings. Cade Kowalski was the hero when he scored the overtime winner 2:54 into the extra session, to give the Wings a 2-1 win.

Riley Lamb was the real hero in this one. He made 56 saves for the Wings in the win, including a number of tough stops on the likes of Jared Legien, Colby Brandt, Branden Klatt, and Cody Bruchkowski.

Both Legien and Bruchkowski had breakaway chances in OT but were denied by Lamb for two of his better stops on the evening. In front of him, his teammates were sloppy, outworked and looked tired for most of the game.

Aside from a few shifts throughout, Yorkton was the first team on all the loose pucks and won most of the individual battles all over the ice. After the first period, the Terriers were outshooting the Wings 18–4 and led 41–11 in the shot department after 40 minutes. Lamb was the difference maker in the 62:54 of action tonight.

Ben Hiltz opened the scoring just under five minutes into the game for his eighth goal of the season and it extended his point streak to six games to start the year. He’s got a point in every Red Wings game this season and now sits tied for the league lead in goals. Jordan Kazymyra and Garrett Szeremley picked up the assists.

Other than the early goal, the Wings failed to generate any sort of offence or establish any puck possession and offensive zone time. They played most of the game in their defensive zone and struggled to get the puck out of their own end.

It eventually cost them when Ayden Bulych evened the game at one apiece when he fired a wrist shot past Lamb with just 1:32 left in the second period. It’s the only puck that would get past Lamb on the night. Legien and Klatt picked up the assists, which means Legien, like Hiltz, has tallied a point in every game so far this season.

The third period was more of the same. The Terriers controlled the play but they couldn’t pot the winner and the game was headed for overtime. A flurry of chances by both teams highlighted a tremendous 3-on-3 overtime frame.

In the end, it was captain Cade Kowalski who took the pass in own end, flew down the wing and past Legien who was attempting to play defence, cut to the middle of the ice and slid a backhander past Ben Laidlaw in net for the game-winner.

It was a game the Red Wings probably didn’t deserve to win, or even be in overtime for that matter. However, good teams find a way to win ugly and that’s exactly what the Red Wings did down in Yorkton on this night.

The squad will have nearly a week off to prepare for their next game and get things sorted out. The red-hot Humboldt Broncos will be in town on Friday night to face the Wings. They’ve won six straight contests after a 0–2 start.
