In just 90 minutes last Friday, Golden West Radio collected more than $700 for a local charity. The Weyburn Salvation Army was presented with $748.50 this Friday. The funds were raised at Golden West Radio’s Community Celebration barbecue event, which was held on June 22 outside the station office.

Discover Weyburn staff, along with everyone from AM 1190, Magic 103 and K 106, hosted the event free of charge, serving hot dogs and collecting donations for the Weyburn Salvation Army.

“Every time there’s an event, it just blows my mind of how supportive the community really is, especially to helping those in need, it’s just amazing,” said Community Ministries Co-ordinator for the Weyburn Salvation Army Jennifer Lorinczy.

“It’s amazing how it adds up,” she noted. “People always say, ‘I don’t have a lot to give’, and ‘I can’t really help you out’, and if everybody just gives a bit, it adds up so fast, and it’s amazing how that really does happen.”

Lorinczy said it all goes back into the community of Weyburn.

“We run a lot of programs this summer,” she said. “Obviously our food bank is kind of our first priority and we are a little bit low so we’ll use a little bit of money for that.”

Backpacks filled with school supplies will be donated to kids this summer as well.

“Last year we gave out 58 backpacks full of school supplies,” she said.

Lorinczy added that the Weyburn Salvation Army is also sending eight kids to summer camp this year.
