Outdoor leisure activities are the perfect way to battle cabin fever with your family and friends, but the warmer temperatures of December put a damper on opening dates for the outdoor skating rink and Crocicurl rink. Although some might be cursing the recent drop in temperatures that we're currently experiencing, the crews working on the ice are glad to finally make some solid progress. Paige Tenbult, the Communications Coordinator for the City of Weyburn, shared that we could see the outdoor rinks opening as soon as next week.

"Crocicurl began flooding this week, which is exciting, but our staff are still needing a bit more time to finish up that flooding and to get the paint on and all the other odds and ends," she said. "As for the outdoor rink at the Credit Union Spark Center, the weather has been a battle with that one for us. But, our staff have been working really diligently to try and get that up and running. This colder weather has been very helpful, so we hope to see that up and running next week."

Tenbult added that folks can keep tabs on when these rinks officially open and find more information regarding their use on the City's official website. For those who have never heard of the great sport of Crocicurl, and what it entails, Tenbult described the activity as a combination of two well-known Canadian pastimes that almost anybody can enjoy.

"Basically, Crocicurl combines two iconic Canadian pastimes: Crokinole and Curling. It's just a great way to get out and try the sport of Curling while implementing the scoring rules of Crokinole," she explained. "Crocicurl is for all ages. The equipment is outside the Weyburn Leisure Centre and it's all kept in the bright yellow box there, along with the rules for how to play."

Tenbult also outlined what folks can expect when the outdoor skating rink at the Spark Centre is fully operational.

"Public skating hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and that's for all ages to enjoy the rink at their own pace. Then we also have open ice from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., and that's where hockey enthusiasts can actually bring out their pucks and sticks and play as well," she said. "We just ask people to follow those rules and those hours of operation at the Credit Union Spark Center rink, which can also be found on the City's website."

Skaters visiting the Spark Centre during the facility's indoor hours of operation can also utilize the change rooms located inside, which will close as the Spark Centre closes. The outdoor skating rink will remain accessible after the change rooms are closed.
