At Weyburn’s last City Council meeting it was decided to light up City Hall blue and yellow, the colours of Ukraine’s flag, in support of Ukraine as Russia invades.

Council voted on this motion unanimously.

“The idea came up just through conversation around the Council and administration table,” Councillor Jeff Richards said. “And administration said that it would be something that they could do would be to light up City Hall in the blue and yellow colours to support Ukraine and Council was absolutely 100 percent in support of that.”

Richards added that he has friends and family of Ukrainian descent.

“Certainly, it’s very powerful for them, and we just wish everybody all the best in this and hopefully it comes to a peaceful end sooner than later.” Richards said.

Lights at Weyburn City Hall

Mayor Marcel Roy said that he voted in favour of this motion because he wanted to show that Weyburn is a city that is open to take in refugees that wish to use the Federal Government program to immigrate here.

“I've been in touch with Dustin Duncan. He is working with the federal government and I've been in touch with him and through text talking to him as to how the program is going to roll out.”

He added that Duncan will advise him when he has more information about how the program is going to roll out.

“We just want to be a city that's open to say, yes, we'll be open and will assist you in getting friends or relatives here.” Roy said.

City Hall will be lit up in these colours for an undetermined amount of time.
