The Weyburn Beavers extended their winning streak to four games Sunday afternoon, as they easily handled the Edmonton Prospects, winning 13-4. The victory also extends the Beavers unbeaten streak at Tom Laing Park, which is now 11 games.

Nolan Machibroda led the way offensively, as he went 5-for-5 at the plate, and added six RBI. Antony Tejada also chipped in two RBI, with Felix Correa, Drake Pilat, Anthony Galindo and Luke Lubinieki driving in a run each. Wade Weinberger had a home run in the first inning to get things started for the Beavers, his third of the season.

“Just hitting it well, and the boys had confidence in me today,” Machibroda said after the game. Originally from Saskatoon, he is in his first season with the Beavers. If the name sounds familiar, it is because his brother Pat also played here in Weyburn, back in 2014.

On the mound, Ken Williams earned the win. He went five innings, striking out three while allowing four runs. From there, the bullpen took over, again, keeping the opponent off the scoreboard. Dalton Ross, Brodie Stairs, Shandon Herrera and Eric Evans pitched in relief, all going one inning each, and all recording one strikeout each.

The scoring started for Weyburn with Weinberger’s first-inning blast. From there, the runs started coming in, thanks in part to control issues from Edmonton pitcher Jason Sieglitz. He would hit three batters in the first inning, and give up three more runs, as Galindo and Machibroda drove in runs to give Weyburn a 4-0 lead.

Sieglitz would last into the second inning, where he walked the first batter he faced, resulting in him getting the hook, and Scott Gillespie coming in.

Weyburn added another run in the third, as Lubinieki drove in Galindo.

Trailing 5-0, the Prospects found their offence. It started with two runs brought in by Nick Spillman with a long single to centre field. A double from Tony Olson then cashed in Spillman, and the next batter, Michael Gahan, batted in Olson with a single of his own. From there, the Beavers shut down the offence of the Prospects, only allowing four more baserunners all game.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers restored their lead. Pilat hit a single to right, bringing in Weinberger who had gotten on base with a double to start the inning. Machibroda, three batters later, the brought home Pilat, along with Cory Ewald. Tejada then picked up the RBI in the next at-bat, as he scored Galindo.

The sixth inning saw the Beavers blow the game wide open with two more runs. A single by Correa scored Machibroda and Galindo. Two more runs came in during the seventh inning, with Machibroda and Tejada picking up an RBI each.
