The Weyburn Beavers made it two wins in a row Monday night when they picked up a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals in Yorkton. The pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, while Cam Williams went yard with a three-run bomb in the eighth inning en route to the win.

The Beavers were first on the board when Corey Wheaton stole two bases and was brought home with a single from Keaton Greenwalt. The Cardinals tied things up in the second before Weyburn edged out front again in the fifth.

A wild pitch from Yorkton pitcher Dillon Champagne allowed Williams to come home from third. With one more runner in scoring position, though, the Beavers couldn’t get any more home in the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cardinals managed to get one more run of their own in with a sacrifice fly off starting pitcher Reid Wall. Wall would finish up the fifth, and call it a night, after striking out six and allowing two hits in his first WMBL start.

The sixth inning saw the Beavers regain the lead, this time for good. Wheaton drove in Luke Lubinieki with a double to right. Two batters later, Wheaton was brought home himself on a single to left by Greenwalt.

Yorkton would pull within one in the bottom of the inning. A wild pitch brought in a run.

After the bottom of the sixth inning, the rain came, delaying everything for roughly 30 minutes. Once play resumed, it would be the Beavers taking over. While neither team scored in the seventh, the bullpen of the Beavers was able to show off their pitching.

Ken Williams, Shandon Herrera, Brodie Stairs and Eric Evans threw an inning each from the mound. The four struck out two batters apiece, helping the Beavers to preserve the lead.

In the eighth, veteran Cam Williams put the game out of reach with his home run.

The Beavers will now prepare for their home opener on Wednesday. They host the Regina Red Sox at Tom Laing Park.
