The sad story of 33-year-old Abbie Speir's suspicious death started on Brome Street in Yellow Grass in April and now is working its way through the Saskatchewan court system with an appearance in Weyburn set for today.

Kevin Obina Okafor, 37, of Yellow Grass.

Kevin Obina Okafor, 37, of Yellow Grass is facing charges of first-degree murder and charges of fleeing a police officer and dangerous use of a motor vehicle after Speir's body was found in her burning home. Okafor allegedly murdered her and then fled the scene, west, before being apprehended near Swift Current.

With the assistance of the Swift Current and Morse RCMP a spike belt was successfully deployed to stop Okafor. His truck was rendered inoperable and went into the ditch eventually coming to a stop on its side. Police pulled him, uninjured, from the vehicle and took him into custody.

Okafor is set to appear in Weyburn Court today to face the charges from Traffic Safety Act violations. It will be Okafor's first appearance in Weyburn Court on these charges and Discover Weyburn will bring you more details as they become available.

Okafor also has more upcoming Regina court dates. They were set after he appeared via video conference in Regina Provincial Court Monday. Okafor's next court date in Regina is Monday, May 29 on charges of first-degree murder.

Update: Okafor did not appear in person or via video conference in Weyburn Provincial Court today. He was on the docket because he never paid a speeding ticket from Nov. 29, 2016. A Weyburn Police Service member with Combined Traffic Services South pulled him over that day on Highway 39 near McTaggart driving 129 kilometres per hour. Judge D. J. Kovatch gave Okafor an involuntary fine of $139. Okafor's charges for fleeing from police will not be heard in Weyburn.
