Construction is underway for a pedestrian crossing light at the intersection of 18th Street and 1st Avenue NE in Weyburn.

The project was approved mid-August by city council and Director of Engineering Sean Abram explained to Discover Weyburn that the intersection is a major one in the growing city.

“There’s been three vehicle-pedestrian incidents, and so it’s obviously seeing a high pedestrian traffic crossing at that point,” Abram explained in August.

Most recently, on Aug. 8, a vehicle collided with a bicyclist.

The installation work is said to be at a cost of $36,608. There had been $88,000 set aside for the project in the 2016 budget.

Once the lights are up, work will be done on the sidewalks in the area, as well as possibly connecting the sidewalks and intersection to the Tatagwa Parkway, to make a comprehensive pedestrian corridor at that intersection.
