Yesterday was hot. That is the easiest way to describe the weather here in Weyburn, as the mercury climbed to 36.3°. The temperature, the highest seen in the province this summer. It was also the hottest August 22nd on record, breaking the old record of 35.6 set back in 1944.

“We haven’t had heat like this in Saskatchewan for, well, since May,” Terri Laing with Environment Canada explained. The heat made it tough to last too long outdoors without a way to cool down. Many cranked up the air conditioning, hit the spray pads in the city, or spent time at the pool.

Adding to the heat was smoke that was coming over the province. The haze was coming from northwest Montana, where a large wildfire was the cause. The smoke is expected to linger around for a bit Tuesday morning, before drifting off.

The hot weather isn’t expected to stick around, though. The five day forecast calls for cooler weather this week, along with some rain showers.
