The past six weeks have seen six tragedies on the water in Saskatchewan, as six people have drowned in the province – four of those children under the age of 6.

“The shocking part is these kids, not at the same time, but in separate incidents across the province,” said Shelby Rushton, the CEO of the Life Saving Society of Saskatchewan. “If we look at last year at the same time, we had four drownings, and those were all adult males.” She added people need to start talking about safety on the water, and taking it seriously.

Rushton is reminding residents of the province to take precautions when out on the water, whether it is on the lake, or in the pool. These precautions include knowing where the drop-offs are in a lake, what the weather conditions are, and keeping children within arm’s reach when out on the water.

It is recommended that if you see someone in distress in the water, or possibly drowning, that unless you are trained in water rescue, to call 9-1-1.
