The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings opened their training camp Friday, with players coming out to show what they have in a quest to wear the winged wheel logo for the upcoming season.

Head coach and general manager Cody Mapes said the return to the ice had been a long time coming after last season was abruptly cut short in November.

“It’s been good,” Mapes said. “The guys came out and worked hard.” He added that when you can bring out the guys come out and be in good competition for the spots on the team, it is a good thing.

“It’s all about these kids getting opportunities, and that’s really all you can promise them at this point is an opportunity to showcase themselves and a lot of these guys are doing a really good job.”

Mapes did hint at a surprise in the camp, but wouldn’t say much more than that.

Practices continue throughout the day Saturday leading into the evening’s Red & White game. There will be more practices and scrimmages Sunday ahead of the game against the Estevan Bruins to kickstart the pre-season.
