The Weyburn Police Service has outlined their plan for the next five years, with the document aiming to serve as a roadmap of sorts for the Weyburn Police Service.

“It was a collaborative effort,” explained Jamie Blunden, the Chief of Police in Weyburn. “It was amongst with the police here, as well as the Police Board of Commissioners and we have input from a lot of community members through a survey that was done with the U of R (University of Regina) back in 2018-19.”

The business plan is a vision for the next five years and contains three key goals: ensuring a safer community, having a healthy organization, and community engagement. Within each of the goals are a number of objectives that they are looking to meet, and have developed strategies and measurable targets within each of them.

Blunden explained the plan itself is a living document, with the goals staying in place over the next five years. “The strategies to meet those goals are going to change on a yearly basis.”

As an example, Blunden talked about a traffic strategy. If at the end of the year, they achieved the goals they have laid out, they can change the strategy and objectives and go from there.

For the goal of community safety, there are three key objectives outlined in the plan. The first objective is the development and implementation of a drug strategy. The second is an enhanced visibility strategy and the third is a traffic safety strategy.

In terms of a health organization, the objectives include enhancing employee safety, health and wellness, enhancing training and professionalism, enhancing the financial health of the WPS, and enhancing relationships with city officials and staff.

The community engagement goal has objectives such as enhancing transparency and accountability to the community and developing partnerships with external organizations and agencies.

“We’re just going to encourage everyone to have a look at it, give it a read,” Blunden added. “It’s about transparency, it’s about being accountable to the community and accountable as police officers.” If there are any questions, he stated they will answer them as timely and best as they can.
