The first of the three Jiffy Lube junior men’s and women’s qualifying bonspiels wrapped up Sunday. There are a total of three qualifying bonspiels across the province, with the top finishers in each one advancing to provincials in January. The women’s event was held in Weyburn, and the men’s event in Estevan.

Women’s Q-Spiel

Sunday’s action saw the completion of the B and C-sides of the tournament. The B-side final was played in the morning draw, with the Wisniewski rink, curling out of the Callie Club in Regina, winning 8-2. Anderson with the loss moved on to one of the two C-side finals. The other morning draws saw Team Ackerman, out of Saskatoon, beating the Lamontagne rink from Lumsden 9-2 to advance to the final against Anderson, while the Thevenot rink, curling out of the Nutana Club in Saskatoon, beat Team Zanki 9-0. Thevenot advanced to the C-side second final, where they would face the Kitz rink, who advanced with a 10-3 win over Team Corbin.

In the afternoon finals, Anderson would pick up the win over Ackerman with a 7-4 final. The other final saw the Kitz rink pick up the 10-7 win over Thevenot. The four rinks who won the A, B and C-side finals have now all earned a spot in the Jiffy Lube Provincials, which are scheduled for January.

Men’s Q-Spiel

The men’s qualifiers were played in Estevan. Sunday, the B-side and C-sides of the tournament finished up. The Vereschagin rink, which moved to the B-side semi-finals after losing out on the A-side final, fell to the Ackerman rink out of Saskatoon by a score of 10-4. In the other semi, Team Tokarz, out of Regina, fell to the Dales rink from Saskatoon 11-6. In the B-side final, the Dales rink would come out on top with a 7-1 win. The loss would put the Ackerman rink into one of the two C-side finals.

On the C-side, the Tokarz rink, who were placed in the semi-finals, got by the Kleifer rink 9-7, setting them up for a showdown with Team Vereschagin in the first C-final. Ackerman would take on Team Wills in the other final.

The Tokarz rink would keep pace with Vereschagin, and the game went to extra ends. Ultimately, it would be Vereschagin who would record the 7-6 final. In the other final, the Ackerman rink dropped a 10-2 decision to the Wills rink in six ends, with Team Wills powered by picking up five in the second end.

The next qualifying spiels for the junior rinks will begin next weekend in Saskatoon. The women will be curling at the Sutherland rink, while the men’s spiel takes place at the Nutana.
