Chalk it up to convenience or awareness, the Weyburn Pharmasave has seen an increase in people getting the flu shot this winter season.

Pharmacist Krista Missal said, compared to last year, her location has seen a 40 per cent increase in flu shots so far.

"Sometimes it's more convenient for people to come in here rather than go to the public health clinics," she said, adding that Pharmasave offers walk-in appointments and is open longer hours.

Missal said there are some reports this year influenza in long-term care facilities, however, this year's flu vaccine has been well tolerated by the general public.

This means little side effects such as fever, chills or an immune reaction; Missal said people are typically just feeling sore in the arm.

As the colder days continue, Missal suggests a few tips to stay healthy for the rest of winter:

  • Get your flu shot if you haven't already
  • Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer
  • Coughing and sneezing into the elbow rather than into the air
  • Eating a lot of healthy fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
