Marco Estrada flirted with a no hitter Monday night, as the Toronto Blue Jays edged by the Seattle Mariners 3-2. The win came in the opening game of a crucial series between the two clubs, as Seattle is three games back of the Jays for the second American League wild card spot.

Estrada took his gem of a performance on the mound onto the seventh inning, allowing just two walks in the meantime. It was broken up when Robinson Cano hit a line drive single up the middle. Estrada was pulled after walking the leadoff batter in the eighth inning. The contingent of Blue Jays fans who made the trip to Seattle for the game gave him a standing ovation as he left the field. Estrada struck out eight, and walked three before Jason Grilli took his place.

Roberto Osuna earned the save, but it wasn’t a guarantee. He gave up a two run homerun in the ninth, but Osuna then managed to strike out Ben Gamel looking to notch his 34th save of the year.

The Blue Jays found their offense off the bats of Edwin Encarnacion, Troy Tulowitzki and Kevin Pillar. Encarnacion hit a two-run homer off of Seattle starter Taijuan Walker in the third. Pillar hit an RBI single in the fourth, after Tulowitzki reached base with a double to lead off the inning.

The Blue Jays were without the services of Josh Donaldson in the seventh inning. The reigning American League MVP was ejected for arguing with the home plate umpire. Donaldson was upset after a check swing, and a fastball on the outside corner that struck him out.

The two teams meet again tonight in Seattle. J.A. Happ will take the mound for the Jays, looking for his 20th win of the season. Hisashi Iwakuma will be on the mound for the Mariners. The game starts at 8:10 p.m. Saskatchewan time, and you can catch all the action on Saskatchewan’s home of Blue Jays baseball, AM1190.
