The Saskatchewan Service Medal is meant to recognize volunteers in the province.

In order to win this award a person or group must be nominated, and one such winner is a Weyburn local.

April Sampson won the award in 2009, though it's certainly not the only award she's won for her volunteer efforts. Sampson has been volunteering for almost all of her life, ranging from helping to start the Weyburn Humane Society to playing organ at her church.

"Did I expect to receive these (awards)? No, of course not, no. (It) was always a very pleasant surprise," said Sampson. "It made me feel like there was always more that needed to be done. What I had done was small, but if it helped move something along, that was good."

The deadline to nominate groups or individuals is Oct. 18.
