The City of Weyburn is encouraging its residents this week to take part in the first annual WeyClean Week, with each person, family, group, or business doing something to help clean up our beautiful City.

"The more buy-in we get from the citizens, the more fun it's going to be," said City Councillor Dick Michel, who is also the Chair of the Environment Committee.

"In the meantime, you clean your city. We have a great city here, but there are pockets that need attention, and we have to address that."

Michel noted there's something about some friendly competition - between groups or teams or businesses - to inspire people to get out there and contribute to the cause.

"They need incentive," he said. "Like I told our committee, the Environment Committee has talked to talk, now the citizens of Weyburn have to walk the walk. Everything is there for us to do. We just have to pay attention and do it and have some fun doing it."

Michel even suggested an eventual possible competition between the five Refuse Collection Pickup Areas in Weyburn.

"We should have a competition between the areas, and take pride in what we're doing," he said. "Competition [...] drives people out to do things."

Some competition has already begun brewing between the two City Councillors who happen to be raising families (read more below).

While the Golden Garbage Can isn't currently in play, Michel added he'd like to some day see that happen, as he's been in chats with Estevan's Mayor Roy Ludwig and they still agree it could be something to resurrect again one day.

Anyone who participates in the clean up on any day this week, or has already been at it, is also encouraged to share photos on social media using the hashtag #weycleanweek, or send them by email to ptenbult@weyburn.ca to have the opportunity to win a prize.
