The City of Weyburn ended 2017 with an operating surplus on the books, according to the audited financial statements which were made available Monday morning. The report, audited by Cogent Chartered Professional Accountants show the City’s budget for 2017 was expected to end in a surplus, but capital contributions from the federal and provincial governments helped to exceed the expectations.

Tax revenue for 2017 was down from 2016. The City was budgeting to see $8,378,800 coming into the coffers, but instead, was over $150,000 off of its target, the biggest portion of it coming due to abatements and adjustments.

The grants in lieu of taxes helped the City out, with $1.4 million coming from SaskPower and nearly $120,000 from SaskEnergy. The grants in lieu have been a topic of discussion at the provincial level for a number of years, with the province talking about ending the practice.
