Southeast College held a Greek Feast on March 9th at the Knox Hall. The event was a fundraiser for the College's new Health Studies Fund Initiative.

More than 100 people were in attendance for a delicious Greek meal and entertainment, including the traditional Greek plate-smashing.

Raising more than $8,000 for students pursuing post‐secondary training in health care related programs at the College, Manager of College Advancement Dave Harazny said the event was a ‘smashing’ success. He said the event organizers did, however, take the necessary precautions.

“We had to create a space that contained all the plate pieces,” he explained. “Obviously we didn't want pieces flying everywhere, so we built kind of a boxed area for people to do that. We auctioned off the plates, so that folks could purchase them if they wanted to partake in that. It was really the highlight of the night.”

He said after a brief demonstration on how to properly break plates, patrons did so throughout the course of the evening’s event.

“These weren't the plates we were eating off of,” clarified Harazny. “They were specially imported from Greece. They're made of a lighter material that break easy and they're smaller. There were different ways to do it, you could smash it directly on the floor, or chuck it at the wall, or you could hold a few in your hand and take one and smash them all with your hand.”

Southeast College currently offers a Continuing Care Assistant Certificate program in multiple locations including Weyburn. They also offer a Practical Nursing Diploma program in Weyburn.

The Health Studies Fund a new initiative for the College and was created to support students in those programs.

“The money raised will help support students pursuing our different health studies programs,” explained Harazny. “So it was great to see the community come together and support that, and support the future of our health care through education.”

He added the evening also included performances from Regina’s Daughters of Penelope dance group.
