WPS respond to unwelcome visitor under heavy intoxication
In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Weyburn Police Service responded to a report of an intoxicated man attempting to enter a residence where he was not welcome. Deputy Chief Shane St. John says the man knew the residents of the house. “They didn't want him in there. He wasn't leaving. He left when they called police, but he was still fairly close to the residence when found. He was intoxicated at a high enough level that he needed to be lodged in cells until he was sober.” After being arrested for being drunk in public, he was released when sober and no charges were laid. St. John explains that taking intoxicated people into custody is a regular occurrence for WPS members. He says there is a lot people can do to prevent becoming a disturbance when intoxicated, however, the effect of alcohol on people's reasoning is what lands them in police custody. “Usually when alcohol is involved, people throw the common sense out the window and end up drinking too much, or their friends end up drinking too much, or they become so much of an annoyance to their sober friends or more sober friends, they don't want anything to do with them, it happens a lot. You can't blame them.” St. John says that when an intoxicated person is left to their own devices, that is typically when they end up in police custody.
