The next step in the process to build on the site of the old Souris School was started Monday night at the regular meeting of Weyburn City Council. A zoning bylaw amendment was before the council to change the zoning for the site from R2 – Residential Semi-Detached to R3 – Residential Multiple Housing. The councillors gave the first reading to the bylaw, which will now come back before the council in roughly a month.

The amendment was put before the council at the request of the owners of the property, Bridge Road Land Management. The company purchased the grounds from the South East Cornerstone Public School Division in February of this year. They put in the request for the rezoning so it will be possible for them to proceed with their plans to build a multi-level seniors care complex on the grounds.

With the first reading passing through the council, public notice will be issued in the coming weeks, and there will be a public hearing regarding the rezoning held during the regular scheduled meeting of Weyburn City Council on October 23rd.
