While the winter storm seems to be letting up slightly in the Weyburn area, it is expected to continue to affect the region for quite a while longer. The advisory from Environment Canada states the system will be lingering around well into tomorrow evening.

By 2:30 p.m. downtown Weyburn had already seen roughly 10.5 inches, or 26 centimetres since the snowfall began. The forecast is calling for close to 40 centimetres, and with another 10 centimetres expected overnight, we could get close to that amount.

Outside of Weyburn, a number of communities are getting the brunt of this storm as well. A number of staff from Discover Weyburn, facing issues like highways where travel was not recommended, or even closed, let us know what the conditions were like where they were throughout the day:

The system could end up being a record-breaking snow event as well. According to Environment Canada, the record for the most snow on the ground for April 19th, 20th and 21st is 35 centimetres, 34 centimetres and 34 centimetres respectively, set back in 2013. If the pace of the snowfall continues at its pace - roughly a centimetre an hour - by midnight we could be looking at setting a new record of snow on the ground.

In terms of total precipitation, that is measured by Environment Canada in millimetres. The amount of precipitation that was received by Weyburn will likely not be available until tomorrow at some point. The current record is 27.9 millimetres, back in 1955 so there is a very good chance that the record for April 19th will be broken.

Highways across the region continue to be a mess thanks to the weather. There have been a number of closures on and off throughout the day due to the conditions, as well as the reduced visibility caused by the blowing snow. While things are starting to improve, there is the possibility they will start to deteriorate as the temperature cools throughout the evening. You can keep up to date with the latest highway conditions by visiting the Discover Weyburn Road Report page.

The snow did prompt the cancellation of rural school buses in the Weyburn area. There is no word at this time if the buses will be operational tomorrow. You can find out the latest by checking on Discover Weyburn.
