A brand new business is getting ready to open its doors in the new year and it will be the first of its kind in the Opportunity City. A doggy daycare and training facility is in the final stages of preparation before accepting registrations for fur babies.

CindyAnn Boehm has been working hard to start the business 'Fido's Place' and has overcome the final hurdle. On Monday night, City Council approved the zoning bylaw to allow Boehm's business to move forward.

"The city was amazing and said yes. It's been a year-and-a-half in the making, so now we can finally say yes to all my suppliers to come in and do the fencing and all the agility equipment," Boehm happily explained. "It's going to take a little while to get the building ready to go, but we're pretty excited."

After a year-and-a-half of work, Fido's Place is closing in on an opening date. Boehm says people can stay on the lookout for a grand opening in the coming months.

"I would love to open the doors in February. I think that's probably reasonable to have all my staff trained. The big thing is, because all the equipment is special ordered we don't have it in Canada and I have to get it from the States, so it will take six weeks for that," she said. "It's a great big empty building and we have to build some walls and make it a little more user-friendly. I'm hoping the middle of February — we will probably take registration a few weeks before we open and then we'll be ready to go."

She says it's going to be a one-of-a-kind service Weyburn has never seen before. She is aiming to "complete and not compete" with other pet businesses in town. Much like with children, dog owners will be able to drop off their pets for the day and allow them to burn off some steam while interacting with other dogs.

"It's going to be pretty cool for Weyburn. It's a 4,200 sq. foot building and it's designed like an indoor dog park with an open concept. In the evening there will be training. I'm going to bring in trainers that will come in and do some behaviour, agility and obedience training," Boehm said. "It's not pretty from the outside, but it's going to be awesome on the inside. Plus I will have half-an-acre fenced in behind, so the dogs will be able to go outside and play in the swimming pools and just run and have fun. It's like a daycare for kids, but it's for dogs."

The building is located at 325 Queen St. and will be fully equipped indoors for an extravagant doggy experience. All the agility toys and equipment will make for a fun environment for both large and small dogs.

Boehm adds all her staff will be "bonded and certified" with training in CPR, basic grooming and more. Her business sign is going up in the coming weeks and the website is in the process of being built.

While Fido's Place won't offer overnight stays for pets, it's a service many Weyburn residents will no doubt welcome for their furry friends.
