Mayor Debra Button put up Weyburn's new Centennial flag in January outside City Hall.

The City of Weyburn is planning for its centennial in 2013 and wants the community to start planning for the year-long celebration.

"A hundred years of age, how about that?" says Centennial Committee Chair Isabelle Butters. "I know it sounds like a long way off but we would be delighted if everyone here locally would start notifying their family and friends that there is a Homecoming in the first weekend in August and please plan their holidays around that. We would like to see as many people here as possible."

The preliminary plans include the Centennial Kick-Off on January 1, 2013, followed by Homecoming Weekend from August 4 to 6 and the White Night, which is a family affair at the Weyburn Comprehensive School on December 31, 2013.

Butters says every organization and business is invited to participate by developing a centennial project or event. Some ideas include legacy projects that are educational, historically significant and will endure beyond the celebration, planting a tree or garden, publishing a book, fixing up a trail, or starting a group.

Centennial events are also encouraged that will recognize the city's milestone while attracting audiences or participants to your organization or group. Also, a group's regular or annual events can be focused on with a centennial theme.

Butters says former Weyburn Collegiate students will be celebrating that school's centennial during the Homecoming Weekend, in addition to the annual Weyburn Rodeo and Wheat Festival.
