The Weyburn Comprehensive School presented Academic Awards on Wednesday night in the Cugnet Centre.

Academic awards were presented to students for individual Grade 12 subject medals, Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Certificates, Grade 12 Honour Roll (for 80% or higher average for the current year), Principal's List (90% or higher average for the current year), and for Grade 12 Scholastic Awards of Merit 3 "A" (80% or higher average for all three years).

Special Awards were presented as well. The R.C. Smith General Proficiency award was presented to Morgan Sidloski for having the highest total of extra-curricular points and grade 12 average, the Douglas Medals for top male and female average went to Matthew O'Neill and Chantal Vogel, and the Tom Zandee Humanitarian Award was presented to Wyatt Fellinger.

Wyatt's inspiring story was shared during a speech given by teachers Margot Arnold and Vanessa Flavel. The soon-to-be graduate has only recently met with some physical challenges in the form of a mystery illness he developed midway through grade eleven. His amazingly positive attitude in the face of such challenges was the subject of their speech's acclaim.

“Wyatt always responds like it’s just another day, 'this is my life, don’t worry about me'. And what we might see as an insurmountable challenge is no big deal to Wyatt,” said Flavel.

“Wyatt amazes me with his ability to move forward and look to tomorrow. His challenges have never stopped him,” said Arnold. “Wyatt, we all believe your future is bright. don’t ever give up on your dreams.”

The Fellinger family has endured doctor visit after doctor visit, as well as dead ends and ups and downs that would dishearten most people. But, as it was warmly put in the teachers' speech, hoping for answers when you are given none is a true test of family courage.

“He has hope that he can walk again strong and tall, that there will be a solution or answer for what happened to him. Wyatt has lots of hope, and hope is a powerful emotional approach for his future," said Flavel. “Wyatt, with hope, all is possible.”

Fellinger said their touching words were not out of the ordinary for him to hear.

“It was not a surprise, most of the teachers tell me every day,” he said. “The teachers have been phenomenal. They’re okay with anything I have to do. Catching me up is no problem when I have to take days for doctors appointments."

"If it wasn’t for these teachers, it wouldn’t be the same," he added.

Fellinger has been making plans for his future.

“I’ll hopefully work for an R.M. and then take my heavy machinery equipment operator certificate," he said, noting that his favourite classes have been the construction classes offered at WCS.

The Grade 12 Honour Roll award recipients all had an 80% or higher average for the current year.

The Principal's List is awarded to students with a 90% or higher average for the current year.
