It's Native Prairie Appreciation Week in Saskatchewan. In fact, it's the 25th year of the observance of the week, and of the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (SK PCAP).

The week of June 18th to 24th was proclaimed by both the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture, as the native prairie is 'part of our provincial identity' - a distinctive ecosystem that brings a multitude of ecological, societal, and environmental advantages while providing a habitat for several species.

"Native Prairie Appreciation Week serves as a fantastic platform to celebrate the diverseness of the native prairie and its indispensable contribution to preserving Saskatchewan's rich biodiversity, carbon sequestration and other economic and environmental benefits," Environment Minister Dana Skoropad said. "I'd like to congratulate the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan on 25 years of dedication to raising awareness of this significant ecoregion and building partnerships across the province to take action for native prairie conservation."

"Native prairie in Saskatchewan is a valuable resource to support the growth of the livestock industry and environmental biodiversity in our province," Agriculture Minister David Marit said."Our ranchers understand the importance of practicing sustainable grazing management to maintain this important ecosystem for generations to come."

Throughout this week, SK PCAP hosts a variety of initiatives including digital events and competitions.

"When the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan started 25 years ago, one thing the partners could agree on was the need to increase awareness about the importance of native prairie in Saskatchewan," SK PCAP Manager Carolyn Gaudet said. "We've been able to recognize and celebrate the value of native prairie every year since Native Prairie Appreciation Week's inception. We have tons of resources available on our website and YouTube Channel to help anyone learn more about what makes native prairie a resource worth appreciating."
