Moose have been visiting Weyburn and other cities in the southeast more frequently lately.

A moose was spotted in Weyburn on the north side of the city over the weekend, and one was seen in Estevan on Friday.

Sergeant Shane St. John of the Weyburn Police Service said that the increase in moose sightings could be due to the cold weather and amount of snow that we’ve had.

“They've migrated into town a little bit. We've had them in the past, but not as many as we've had lately.”

Government of Saskatchewan Conservation Officer Lindsey Leko said that it is best to keep your distance from a moose, as their speed and size can be a deadly combination.

"I often see people just trying to get as close as they can to the animal," Said Leko. "[With] a moose, there's not a lot of forgiveness. When those ears snap back and if you've got too close, you're going to find out about it."

He added that taking a picture is fine, but it's not a good idea to get too close.

"They're unpredictable, and they're potentially dangerous. Even smaller animals are dangerous as well. Treat it with respect and keep your distance and you should be good to go."

On top of the moose sightings, there was also a cougar spotted near Estevan recently. Read all about it here.
