The Weyburn Curbside Pick Up Recycling Program started at the beginning of July.

Regens Disposal, who have the recycling collection contract with the City of Weyburn, had a customer appreciation Barbecue today to say thank you to the people of Weyburn for engaging in the program.

"We did the math the other day and we figured out in Weyburn we've done over 46000 kilograms of recycled material in the last six or eight weeks it's been out. We did a little comparison and figured its equivalent of eleven elephants which gives a great example of what that looks like," said Travis Frank, Sales and Marketing Manager of Regens Disposal.

The day was a community supported event, as different Weyburn businesses and organizations were involved. Frank thanked Weyburn's Council and Mayor for attending as well as Weyburn's Chamber of Commerce, some Weyburn businesses for participating in the event and the community of Weyburn for participating in the curbside recycling.

It is expected that the curbside recycling collection will add decades of life to the current Weyburn Landfill.

"It's an absolutely vital part of the community. It diverts waste from the landfill so we're not filling up the landfill. It will extend the life of the landfill," said Graham Fox, General Manager for Regens Disposal

The Recycling Collection of Weyburn could extend the life of the Weyburn City Landfill by ten to twenty years in one estimation with another estimation up to as much as forty years.

City of Weyburn Counsellor, Mel van Betuw thanked Mayor Roy for helping to spearhead the program. He also thanked previous Weyburn Councils for doing a lot of the leg work on this project as it has been in the works for ten to twelve years.

"I would like to thank Regens for their wonderful job that they have done so far in getting this program started and the citizens of Weyburn for their participation has been great recycling is very important to the community and to the landfill to make it sustainable," said van Betuw.

Regens Disposal also announced the new availability of single stream recycling for apartment buildings and multi-dwelling units.
