Sometimes, a stern talking to and alternate consequences can go a long way when it comes to policing.

Last Monday, the Weyburn Police Service received a call about a pair of youth who were walking up along Government Road carrying road signs. The caller said it appeared they were removing the signage along the roadway. Officers were dispatched to look into the situation.

“They were able to locate a couple of youth, had them actually put back at least one of the signs in the proper place,” explained Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype. “The other sign had sustained a little bit of damage.”

The two youth were then brought back to the Weyburn Police Service office, and the parents were called. The pair were given a warning, and agreed to cover the cost of the damaged sign. No charges were laid.

“All of us were kids at one time, and possibly got into a little bit of mischief,” VanDeSype added. “This is one where, you know, they were caught, they took accountability, the parents were spoken to and they were warned, so in the end, I would hope that they learned their lesson.”

The call was one of 71 received by the Weyburn Police Service in the week ending April 7th. There were 21 charges that resulted from those calls. Four were under the Criminal Code, 16 under the Traffic Safety Act, and one under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations.
