There is a new president for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings. Jamie Blunden is stepping into the role as the team celebrates its 60th season.

“I’m not gonna lie, I’m going to say I’m a little anxious about it,” Blunden told Discover Weyburn. “I know that Brent Stephanson did a fantastic job in five years at the helm and plus. I think it’s intimidating, but I’m really excited about it at the same time.”

Blunden is no stranger to leadership roles, nor the world of hockey. He is currently the Chief of Police in Weyburn, and he also played Junior A hockey in the 86-87 season with the Dauphin Kings of the MJHL.

The Red Wings will be entering the 2021-22 campaign in good shape on the books, and Blunden knows that it will take the involvement of the whole community to keep things that way.

“I think we’re looking at getting some season tickets out there, and getting back at the rink,” Blunden said. “It’s been a long year and a half with respect to the COVID situation, and with the rink opening up and the ability to play more games at home here, I think we’re really counting on the community to come together and get out to the rink.”

For Blunden, another key to success for the season will be those working off the ice, and behind the bench. He stated he was excited about what the coming season could hold.

With this being the 60th anniversary of the club’s founding, he explained there is a lot to be expected over the course of the campaign.

“We’ve got a new logo going out there to represent the 60th anniversary,” Blunden added. “I know we’re going to look at a few things throughout the year to celebrate the 60th, and there’s a lot of tradition there.”

The Red Wings start their fall training camp on September 3rd, with the regular season kicking off when the Melville Millionaires come to town on September 24th.
