In an effort to provide more accurate details about the weather, Environment Canada has released a new app. 'Weather CAN' tracks where you are and provides up-to-date forecasts and alerts in your current location.

"The other really good thing about this app is it's giving high-resolution radar imagery for areas that have radar coverage. So, the Estevan and Weyburn areas have good coverage from that perspective and you get one-kilometre high-resolution radar imagery in real time from that application," explained Meteorologist Brian Proctor with Environment Canada.

The app has the option to continually use your location while it isn't even in use to provide push notifications for certain weather emergencies, as well as provide more accurate details about the forecast.

"The key thing for it more than anything is that it really provides you with up to date forecasts and alerts for the location you are by using your cell phone to realize where you are at all times. If you're travelling out of your usual area, the app will give you the most up-to-date radar and up-to-date forecast information."

The app is free for the public and available at most app stores. The application runs on iOS 10 or up for iPhones and will run on most Android devices on the market.

"Really, it's about giving people a better way to stay in touch with things weather-wise no matter where they are," said Proctor.
