Tampons are classified as a luxury because they cost very little to produce and have a very high-profit margin.

Which is great if you own one of the companies that produce them but very terrible for homeless or low-income women that desperately need them for their everyday life.

Luckily Sandra LaRose of Tyvan is doing what she can to help solve that problem in our area by collecting donations of feminine products through her nonprofit 'Sharing Kailynn's Sunshine Foundation' and then donating them to a bigger project.

"Period Purse Regina is doing their 2021 blitz right now where they are collecting new pads, tampons, packs of underwear, cloth masks and cash donations," said LaRose. "So we thought that we would do our own side collection for them to collect those items and if people want to give cash donations for us to purchase the items we can do that as well."

The Canada-wide project began in Ontario in 2017 and was started by a woman named Jana Girdauskas.

After encountering a woman experiencing homelessness while driving in her car, but without any items to give, she began questioning what this individual would do during menstruation.

Curious, concerned and committed, Girdauskas was compelled to fill one purse with menstrual products and other wellness items. She planned to keep the pack in her car for a person in need. With everything to fill the purse at home, she was just missing the physical bag. So, she asked a local Facebook group if anyone had a spare "period purse" to share.

Within a month, she received 350 purses filled with donated products. Today, The Period Purse is the first (and only) Canadian registered charity to deal with menstrual equity.

"It's something that I think people don't necessarily think about but there are quite a few women out there that can't afford the products that are needed monthly and they're not cheap," LaRose explained. "So this is a way of guaranteeing cleanliness, hygiene, and safety. And it's all done in an anonymous and secure setting."

At the start of the month, LaRose set a goal for her foundation to collect 5,000 items for the Period Purse project and so far they have made it half of the way toward their goal.

For those unaware of what products to purchase LaRose has set up an Amazon wishlist that you can view HERE.

She did however encourage people to shop local for the items if they are able to do so.

"For everybody in Weyburn. Pharmasave has graciously agreed to be a drop-off location. So there will be a bin there," stated LaRose. "Any items that are purchased through Pharmasave will receive a 10 percent discount to be donated towards the cause."

LaRose will be in Weyburn to pick up all of the donations on March 27, 2021. So she is requesting that all of the donations be into Pharmasave by March 26th.

For those able to make it to Regina to drop off items or those that are interested in learning more feel free to send a message to the Sharing Kailynn's Sunshine Foundation Facebook page.

Donations call also be dropped off Monday to Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM at 1545D Mcara Street in Regina all the way till March 25th.
