Icy conditions on the roads in the Weyburn area bring a reminder from the Weyburn Police Service for drivers to use extra caution if the conditions are less than ideal.

"We are in a time of year where melting temperatures during the day, freezing at night, we get some moisture that turns to ice in the mornings," said Deputy Chief Brent VanDeSype.

"With icy conditions on the roads. if you don't have to go, don't go out," he advised. "Or, possibly go out later in the day when it has a chance to warm up, or the road crews have a chance to do their jobs."

For those who have to drive in these conditions, VanDeSype advised:

  • Know your vehicle.
  • Know the road conditions.
  • Tires make a difference.
  • Speed makes a difference.
  • Visibility makes a difference.
  • Ensure your windshields are clean.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Be able to predict the actions of other drivers.
  • Adjust your speed according to the conditions.
  • Give yourself sufficient time to react and to break.
