The Soo Theatre is coming down.

Notices were distributed to businesses in the downtown area Tuesday afternoon advising that the demolition of the theatre would start Thursday and is expected to take up to 20 days. The entire process will be weather dependent, and could potentially be delayed due to the coming winter storm that is expected to hit overnight Tuesday.

During the demolition process, the northbound traffic lane of 3rd Street, the east parking lane of 3rd Street and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed. There are also expected to be periodic closures of the back alley behind the theatre to allow for demolition crews to have access to the rear of the building, and to ensure the safety of surrounding properties.

During the demolition process, there will be limited access to 3rd Street, and traffic will be limited to local traffic only. Alternate parking in the area will be available in the parking lot off 4th Street, and the parking lot off 2nd Street.

Some of the preparatory work for the demolition has already happened, with asbestos abatement happening during the winter, and SaskPower physically disconnecting the power lines from the building earlier this week.
