The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #47 in Weyburn recently made a post on social media thanking their staff, volunteers and executives for the work they do every day. The post came after their final Sunday brunch of the year, held on December 11th.

Debbie Kator is the secretary/manager at the Weyburn Legion. She said the staff at the Legion has continually shown they are a phenomenal group.

“They pitch in, they work hard and they’re awesome. That’s all I can say about the staff, and they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make the Legion work,” Kator mentioned. She did note, though, while the staff is as great as they are, a lot of what happens at the Legion wouldn’t be possible without a dedicated corps of volunteers.

“You don’t even have to call them,” Kator chuckled. “They call us to say, ‘Okay, when’s the next brunch? I’ll be there.’ They are willing to do anything that has to be done. We have people doing dishes, we have people cleaning trays, we have people taking money. All of it is important.”

Kator added the volunteers are what makes the Sunday brunch, which is held ten times a year, possible, as the Legion wouldn’t be able to afford to pay everyone and serve a brunch.

“They’re giving funds back to our organization, and they’re the best representation that we could possibly have.”

While the volunteers and staff are important, the executive was also singled out by Kator for appreciation and recognition of what they do. She mentioned three board members specifically – President Brian Glass, vice-president Jerry Ponto and Sergeant-at-Arms Owen White.

“They do so many things inside this building, all volunteering, and they are part of the heart and soul of the Legion.”

The most recent brunch, which included a visit from Santa Claus had over 150 people attend. The next brunch, which will have the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings attending to help out, is scheduled to be held on January 14th.
