The Saskatchewan government has raised $109 million in its latest sale of oil and gas drilling rights.

Although the April land sale announced Thursday was $81 million less than April, 2010, it's still the third-biggest ever and represents "a great sale," Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd said in a news release.

Oil company interest in the Shaunavon area in the southwest accounted for more than half of the money raised: $57 million.

There was also strong interest in the Estevan-Weyburn area in the southeast, which is home to the oil-rich Bakken play.

Land sales in that area topped $40 million.

The province auctions off drilling rights every two months. The next sale is June 6.
